Traditions

tra·di·tion       noun \trə-ˈdi-shən\

A way of thinking, behaving, or doing something that has been used by the people in a particular group, family, society, etc., for a long time.  Pick one question to share an answer with us.   We’d love to hear from people around the world.  It’s exciting to us when we get a comment to read and compare to our life.

What are traditions at this time of year around your house?

What is the most important tradition to you and why?

What holiday do you celebrate and  what traditions in your home  go with that celebration?

  1. Dear Roadrunners,
We celebrate Advent at this time of year, and advent is the period running up to Christmas. It begins on the Sunday closest to November 30th, and continues to Christmas Eve. It is a ‘countdown’ to Christmas, a time for Christians to prepare themselves for the celebration of the birth of Christ, and that Jesus came into the world and promised to return.
Advent is traditionally celebrated with candles, wreaths and calendars. On an advent calendar, you open one ‘door’ a day in the calendar, and behind it is a picture of something related to Christmas. Many advent calendars nowadays have chocolate behind the doors.
In our school, we have an advent wreath with 5 candles, one for each Sunday in the lead up to Christmas. By the time it gets to Christmas day, all 5 candles are lit.
A Room with a View has made its own special Advent calendar this year, which you can see on our blog.
