Rocky River Elementary

This year I have a new role at Rocky River Elementary as the Global Studies/21st Century Skills/Technology teacher.  My name is Mrs. Todd and I look forward to new and exciting chances to collaborate with you.   Our school has about 800 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

We live in the Piedmont of North Carolina with rolling hills and flat areas.  We are between the mountains and beaches.  Charlotte is a large city near us where there are many things to do.  We can travel a few hours and go to the beach or to the mountains.  Are we like you? In many ways we are all the same but we also have differences.  We are a Global Gateway School and 2nd grade students are involved in Global Studies.   Each grade level was assigned a country to focus on for the year.

We love skyping and blogging with our friends in England- A Room With a View class.  We’ve learned a lot from them.  We love being involved in different projects with different schools around the world.

We hope to have many projects this year to share with you.

  1. Hello from Catalonia (Spain)!

Thank you for visiting our blog. We are always excited when we have new visitors. In Spain school will soon be over too (22nd June is the last day). We start again the 10th September. At the moment we are quite busy preparing the end of the school year festival.

We’ve got lots of blogs in our school but most of them in Catalan, the language spoken in our area. In Our English Blog you can only find activities we do in the English classes. That’s my job, I’m the English teacher.

If you want to know more about our school clic on the folder WHO WE ARE in our blog. There’s also a video we recorded to show our school to visitors. I hope you enjoy it.

I like you are from North Carolina. This year the 6th graders in their CLIL lessons (Science in English) have been learning about The Lost Colony. They really enjoyed the mistery of Roanoke Island.

    Keep in touch!

    Marisa

  2. Dear Mrs Todd and Room 117B,

Thanks for visiting my blog! I have loved looking around at your blog and your fantastic posts. You write wonderfully and they have great content too.

I see that your focus country is Australia and we would be happy to help you out. At the moment our Grade 1/2 classes are not blogging, but we would be happy to help as our students are 8/9 so not that big of a difference really!

We are starting a project reading a book called Flat Stanley so please do get in touch if you are interested in that. Later in Term 2, we will be studying a lot about Australia and indigenous culture, so we would love to help you out as we learn as well. I am from Ireland, so this will be great learning for me too.

Great to hear from you, and we look forward to blogging with you this year.
    Mrs Murphy

  4. Hi Mrs Todd and the students at Rocky River Elementary

Thanks very much for your help in collecting weather data for us during February April. We had great fun using your data to try and work our where you might be before creating some graphs using your data. We have added a new blog post
about our work. We found it interesting to see the variation in the maximum and minimum temperatures and enjoyed reading your great descriptions of the day’s weather.

    regards

Mrs S and the students of 5/6 CS

    • We enjoyed learning about your weather and the other schools in other parts of the world. We are just returning from spring break. We have abut 9 weeks of school left before it’s our summer break.

  5. Hi everyone,

I received a comment on one of my blog posts asking for information about Australia’s Outback, the schools, the stations (sheep/cattle) and School Radio of the Air.
I have prepared a first post looking at a trip I organised for parents and children at a school back in 1985. From Sydney, our trip of over 7000km (over 4350mi) took us into Central Australia to see Uluru and many sites along the way. The post includes photos, information, and even some video clips I captured in 1985 and have converted to digital in order to share them.

I am now working on a post looking at the schools, the stations (sheep/cattle) and School Radio of the Air. My first permanent teaching school in 1981 and 1982 was listed as the sixth most isolated school in the state of New South Wales. It served children from sheep and cattle properties. The post will share a little about that school and look at even more isolated schools and the need for schools for isolated children relying on radio.

The second post should be ready within a week.
