Weather has been hot in Victoria, Australia

  • Ms. Crowther’s reports that summer has been very hot and dry in Australia for their holiday.  They are back in school now and starting a new school year.

  • Wonder how the animals survive all the heat?
  • We wondered if they have air conditioners in their homes, businessess and schools?
  • Different seasons bring different weather….
  • Australia, England to the USA and North Carolina all have different weather yet sometime during the year they are hot and/or cold.  They have rainy days, snowy days and sunny days.
  • How much difference is there in weather in the different regions of  Australia?   We have a lot of different weather from California to North Carolina and from Alaska to Hawaii.

  1. Hi everyone,

It is interesting to compare weather around the world. Even in one country there can be a BIG difference in weather conditions. In Australia there have been bushfires in the South Eastern states and lots of flooding in the North.

Some people have air conditioners to cope with the heat, but many do not. Businesses in the city usually do. At our school only one of the buildings has an air conditioner. The other buildings are designed so that they should stay cool with just fans. It works well in one of the buildings and not so well in the other one.

On hot days wild animals shelter under the trees and come out in the early evening when the sun goes down and it is a bit cooler. You often see the kangaroos around the dam (pond) getting a drink at this time.

We actually had some rain yesterday and cool winds, which was very nice. Is it by windy where you live?

  2. Dear Roadrunners,
In England there is some variation in our weather, but not nearly as much as there is in larger countries like Australia and USA. The south of England has a much milder climate, and is often a few degrees warmer than where we are in the north, but further north in Scotland the weather is harsher, with more snow and higher rain fall. We live on the edge of the Pennines, a range of hills which are the ‘backbone’ of England. It’s wetter where we are because clouds gather over the hills, then dump all their rain on us! It’s called living in the rain shadow.
Today I went for a walk and I had to wear wellies, because now all our snow has melted, and we’ve had a week of rain, and the ground has turned to MUD! Walking across the fields and through the woods was heavy going today, as we were slipping and sliding all over the place!

  3. Hi Mrs Todd and Roadrunners,

We have a thermometer in our classroom to record the weather- do you? It is our summer over here at the moment, it has been very hot with the weather getting to the high 30s on some days. We don’t have air conditioning in our classroom, but we do have fans. We have to make sure we drink lots of water during the day. A lot of us have air conditioning in our homes though.

It hasn’t rained much here in Victoria during the summer, it has been so dry that there has been bushfires. Some of the fires happed really close to our home, but luckily none of our homes were damaged. However, in Queensland (Northern Australia) it has rained so much it has flooded!

  4. Hey Roadrunners,

We are from 5/6JC @ UPPS.

    THE AIR CONDITIONING ISSUE:

Our Air conditioning is the only one in the WHOLE school! We are very lucky to have air conditioning. Maybe channel 9, 7 or 10 will come to our school to report about the lack of air conditioning in any other classroom. See how we are lucky?!

    From,

    Eve and Madison
