Welcome Back

Hello world,

We are busy learning about schools around the world and would like to learn more about your school to compare.

Please leave us a brief description of your school, the school day and where you are located.

We have about 820 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.  We have 17 pre-kindergartens that are four year olds.  We have about 150 kindergartens.  There are 8 classrooms of kindergarten children.  We have six and seven of other grades.  When you are in first grade you might be six then turn seven.  We have about 40 classroom teachers.  We have a PE teacher, music, art, global studies/technology and media teacher for specials.

Our school Rocky River is 7 years old.RockyRiverMisc_2011089

  • It’s very bright and shaped like a capital E.  We have bright blue, bright green and orange hallways.
  • We have 3 playgrounds.
  • We are located in Monroe, North Carolina in Union County.

We got our first postcard this week through the post card project.  It came from the Shetland Islands.  We were very excited to compare their playground to our playground.  It came from Burravoe Primary School.  Do you know where we  found the Shetland Islands?   We looked them up on google earth today.  Can you find them?

  • Some of us bring lunch from home and some buy and eat lunch from our cafeteria.
  • We have math, literacy (reading, writing, word study) and science or social studies daily.   We have recess (outside time for 30 minutes) and lunch.  We go to specials for 40 minutes each day.
  • Some of us come to school by car and many by big yellow buses.  No one walks to school.
  • Monroe is a small town outside Charlotte, NC which is about 30 minutes away.  There are about 27,000 people we found out.    It has farms, the city streets and buildings and several other nearby small towns.  There are about 30 elementary schools in Union County.  We might see horses, cattle, sheep, goats, chickens on our way to school.   We see neighborhoods with many houses.  We see houses by themselves.

Visit the website for Monroe to learn more about where we are.

  1. Hi Roadrunners!
Our school is a LOT smaller than your school. We’re located in the countryside, not near any big cities at all. There are around 60 children in our school, three teachers and a head teacher.
You start school in Reception at the age of 4. We have 8 new Reception children in our school this year. There are three classrooms – one for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 (4-7 year olds), one for Year 3 and Year 4 (7-9 year olds) and one for Year 5 and Year 6 (9-11 year olds).
Our school day starts at 9am. We have registration, then Guided Reading activities, Maths and Literacy in the morning. We all get together just after 10am for Collective Worship, or whole school assembly, then we have a 15 minute playtime outside. Lunch is from 12 – 1pm. We all eat lunch together in the school hall. This is used for PE and Assembly too. In the afternoon we do music, PE, RE, Science, Art, History, Geography, French or Design Technology (not all of those things every afternoon!)
In the afternoons, the children in the two upper classes (Y3 – 6) join together for their lessons. We finish lessons at 3.15pm. Sometimes there are sports clubs after school.
We get to school on foot if we live in Middleham, or by school bus or taxi if we live on the farms or in the villages around the town. Some of us have to catch the school bus at 8am to get there in time.
Our town is famous for its racehorses, and its magnificent castle. It’s a beautiful town to visit, and lots of tourists come here in the summer time.
I hope this gives you a good idea about going to school in the countryside in England.

  2. Hi Mrs Todd and the Roadrunners,

I am Chelsea from Upper Plenty Primary School in Australia.

Your School is a lot bigger than our school as well. We have around about 173 kids at our school. We have eight classes including 2 prep cases ( preps start when they are about 5 or 6), 2 grade 1 classes, 1 grade 2 class, 1 grade three class, one 4/5 class and one 5/6 class ( which I am in).

Our school have rotations every week as well. Art, Topical Issues, P.E, R.E and science are what we do every week. However we do have Friday rotations that we do with other teachers and we swap these activities every term. Our school term has almost finished. Next term it will be 4th term and my class named 5/6JC, will have Cooking and Music.

Our assemblies are held on Friday just before home time which is at 3:15 for the early group and 3:30 for the late pick up group.

I forgot to mention that our school time starts at 9 am and as I said before, it commends at 3:15pm to 3:30pm.

Hope you liked reading my comment what term are you in right now. did you just get back from school holidays?

    Happy Blogging! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  4. Hi Roadrunners and Mrs Todd,

It’s grade 2K from UPPS here. We are from the same school as Chelsea, but in a different grade.

Welcome back to school! We have recently come back from school holidays too. We are in our fourth (and final) term of the year now. We found it interesting that you change grades half way through the year. We are grade 2s this year and won’t start grade 3 until the start of next year. The holidays we’ve just come back from were only two weeks long. How long were yours?

Next week we are starting our swimming program. We will take a bus to the local pool and learn how to be strong, safe swimmers. It is really important to be able to swim in Australia because lots of us head to the beach or cool off in the pool during our hot summers. It is quite common for it to reach 30 degrees Celsius on Summer days. Does your school have a swimming program?

    Happy blogging,

From Grade 2K and Miss Kenny at UPPS.

  5. Miss Kenny and Grade 2K,
We do not have a swimming program at our school. We are out of school during the summer months of June, July and August so children go to local neighborhood pools, Y pools, and fitness center pools with their families.

Our holidays vary but the longest is during the summer. We get out on June 10 and return to school about August 25th. We have a few days at Christmas in December and again at Easter time we get about a week.
